Jyreen’s father was a famous alchemist. She used to watch him in his alchemy lab as he worked every day. He was experimenting with the essence of shadow and its effects on living organisms. He was writing a study for the College of Winterhold. Sadly, this experiment would be his final work. Jyreen was in the lab when the shadow essence escaped its containment and burned her father to cinders. The shadow then enveloped the young girl, and instead of burning her alive, joined with her at the cellular level.
Scholars and mages from around Skyrim came to Whiterun to study her. Rumors began to circulate of a child that was cursed by shadow. Those who studied her often spoke of the enormous power within her body. Some were fearful of what the child was becoming and demanding she be destroyed before the shadow completely controlled her body. The Archmage of Winterhold refused to kill the child and instead instructed his best mages to train her to control the power of shadow. He gifted her with a focus in the form of a sword and also had her trained in the usage of it. The focus allowed Jyreen to control the shadow magic within her and use it as a weapon through the sword or through her unique shadow spells.
On the surface, this shadow magic seemed a gift to many, but what many don’t know is that the shadow curse is killing Jyreen slowly. Unless a true cure is found, it will eventually consume her completely. For now, with the help of healers and alchemical potions, Jyreen has devoted herself to the defense of the realm in whatever way her unique powers can offer.
